The Client

The Humane Society of Morrow County opened its doors in 1974 with one mission: to strive for the humane treatment of all animals. When they approached Oneupweb looking for a new website, we knew we needed to help them further that mission. From dogs and cats to horses and turtles, Oneupweb needed to design a digital presence that educated owners, encouraged adoption, solicited community support and fostered the reporting of animal abuse and neglect.

The Tactics

  • Use design elements that embrace the shelters rural environment and make the organization’s mission visible.
  • Prominently feature adoptable animals, including those beyond dogs and cats.
  • Encourage adoptions, donations, pet fostering, membership and volunteerism through the site.
  • Drive loyalty and lifetime commitment from the community by incorporating links to the organization’s newsletter, blog and other resources as well as integrating social sharing features.
  • Ensure that visitors can quickly and anonymously report animal neglect and abuse.
  • Make the site easy to update so that content and imagery always reflects current animals in need and critical items the shelter needs to convey to the community.

The Takeaway

With a complete redesign, the website immediately conveys the Humane Society’s mission while prominently featuring all of the animals that are in need of help. Whether looking to adopt an animal, volunteer or report animal abuse, visitors to the site find the usability and navigation intuitive. And after launching the site, Oneupweb trained the Humane Society volunteers to update content within the site, ensuring that the non-profit organization could sustain the functionality and purpose of the new design. The site also now allows for donations to be made online, directly from its home page.
