What You Need to Be Asking About Your Website’s Usability

Your website is your online persona. It should be a good reflection of who you are and how you want to be known. When your site doesn’t work as it should, you don’t look good. Your brand and sales can suffer as visitors abandon your site. And your competitors profit from their defection.

The New Year is an excellent time to take a closer look at your website’s usability.
Here are a few questions you need to be asking:
  • Can a visitor immediately recognize your company by the images, language and/or design of your website? And is that image consistent with your offline branding?

  • Is your site organized in a way that a typical customer would find familiar and/or intuitive? Is it easy to get from one part of the site to another?

  • Does each page deliver what’s promised with enough information to generate a purchase? Are details about pricing, options and/or shipping explained clearly?

  • Are you asking for too much unnecessary personal information on your forms?

  • Does your site perform well with all major web browsers?

  • Are your security features performing as promised? Have your Privacy and Use policies been updated to meet the latest requirements?

  • Are there significant bottlenecks in your checkout process that are negatively impacting sales?

  • Is your site addressing all your customers’ preferred methods of communicating?

  • Are there effective and established mechanisms for interaction with the press,
    analysts and stakeholders?

  • Do the analytics installed on your site provide the most relevant or useful data, or are you simply measuring what’s easiest to collect?

  • Is your site positioning well in the search engines?

  • When something is working well or poorly, are you able to determine why?

Time for a Usability Checkup:

If you don’t like—or worse, don’t know—the answers to the above questions, maybe it’s time you considered what we at Oneupweb call a Usability Checkup. The idea is to take a systematic look at how your website is performing and develop a strategy to address its shortcomings. It may be that the site is doing exactly what was intended, but those intentions failed to consider the needs of the customer, changing technology and/or competitive pressures in the marketplace. Whatever the causes, the effects of a poorly performing website can be costly. And the New Year may be the best time to begin identifying and implementing solutions that will look better on next year’s bottom line.

To find out what’s involved in a Usability Checkup, look for our upcoming paper, Time for Your 15-Point Usability Checkup, at Oneupweb.com.
