Oneupweb recently polled our people on the front lines—our natural and paid project managers and their team leaders—to see where they will be helping clients focus their attention during the first quarter of 2008. We’ve assembled the results and organized them into a "Top 10" list that will prove helpful to any online marketer.

  1. Conduct PPC Ad Testing
    • Test your current creative on a scientifically selected sampling of your target market.
    • Try different copy, headlines, keywords and search engines.
    • Adjust and test again.

  2. Track Offline Conversions
    • Collect online-generated sales data from offline locations.
    • Assess what promotions worked best on- and offline.
    • Look at how on- and offline activities can complement each other.

  3. Add Social Media Marketing
    • Investigate adding compelling video content to your website.
    • Consider adding corporate podcasts and a company blog.
    • Identify and participate in appropriate online social communities.

  4. Review Usability
    • Test your checkout usability.
    • Look at the complaints and suggestions you received during the holidays.
    • Consider an independent site usability check-up.

  5. Examine Local Search
    • Look at your company’s local search positions.
    • Check popular online directories to see where and how you’re listed.

  6. Assess Your Keywords
    • Identify your top converting keywords from the fourth quarter.

    • Look for competitors who may be aggravating these situations.

  8. Review Return Customer Data
    • Determine how much of your business is being generated by return customers.
    • Solicit feedback from return customers regarding improvements they’d like to see.
    • Develop a customer retention plan based on feedback.

  9. Ramp UP PPC Spending
    • Experiment: try different search engines and outlets.
    • Compare different promotions and messages.

  10. Initiate Intelligent Integration
    • Determine what creative, pages, messages and promotions work best for you.
    • Identify your effective creative elements and standardize these wherever possible.
    • Solicit an outside professional perspective to help implement this process.
