Businesses, hoping to cash in on the Web 2.0 phenomenon, are using podcasts to reach a growing audience. They’re looking to tap a viable marketing niche to catch the trend toward…iProfits…

If podcasting companies make money through production fees and product placement, clients will be looking for a return on their investments. Lisa Wehr, founder of Michigan-based Oneupweb, said businesses see several benefits, including brand building and customer retention. Oneupweb, a full-service online marketing firm, launched a podcasting service and a tracking system last year called PodTractor.

Until Oneupweb released PodTractor, commercial podcasters couldn’t easily determine from where and when their podcasts were downloaded on iTunes. Knowing how often their podcasts are being downloaded might make businesses more likely to pay for them.
