Hot Off the Desk of Lisa Wehr CEO, Lisa WehrI'm currently on the open road in my vintage motor home and writing this column—thanks to my iPhone. What a long distance this internet and multimedia enabled piece of plastic and glass has taken us (literally and figuratively). From GPS navigation on my iPhone to "hole-in-the-wall diner finder" apps—it's amazing to think of how far technology has advanced at what seems like light speed. Smartphones have had a major impact on our everyday lives; changing our habits and behaviors, which makes for a seismic effect on marketing. Just as the internet made search mandatory, the smartphone is quickly propelling sophisticated mobile and social media marketing strategies to become the new norm. Here are three quick tips to make sure your brand is not only found by your prospects and customers in this new media landscape—it wows them.
  • Transparency and Authenticity Are the New Black: Social media not only gives marketers an unprecedented opportunity to communicate with the public 24/7—it's the very reason the public now demands it of your brand. Transparency and authenticity build trust, which is critical to social media and mobile marketing success. And remember this, every brand stands to benefit from advocates and evangelists. Building a following that knows and embraces the personality of your brand is not only the first step towards brand evangelism, it's easily enabled by social media with the appropriate strategy in place.

  • Remember, It's A Channel: Had consumer behaviors not evolved, we'd still be reading the newspaper. Much like the smartphone and social media, television introduced a new level of entertainment, utility and brand engagement when it hit the scene. But marketers didn't immediately abandon newspaper advertising with the advent of television. Instead, it was a channel they integrated to build and strengthen their brand. Social and mobile are much the same. They're channels, and while powerful, it's critical that they are integrated into a broader spectrum of digital media to build and strengthen your message, reach and success. Integration is, always has been, and always will be the key to reaping maximum ROI.

  • Utility, Entertainment and Relevance Sell: Think back to the last road trip you navigated. Did you notice every billboard that you passed? No! We tune them out until we either need them for something (like food, gas or a rest stop), find them highly creative and entertaining, or relevant. The same applies to both mobile and social. One of these three factors need to drive the strategy behind your campaigns before your audience (be they brand evangelists or not) willfully and sustainably invite them into their lives.
Enjoy your summer and take advantage of the new technology life has to offer—it makes a "change of scenery" remarkably easy, and you never know just how far a fresh perspective might take your business. If you want to chat more about social media or mobile strategies for your business, you can find me on Twitter @lisawehr, shoot me an email or give me a call at 877.568.7477. New Twitter URL Shortener: Is It Bye-Bye Bit.ly?

This summer, Twitter plans to release its link shortener, t.co, allowing users to shrink URLs directly from Twitter. Geared primarily towards users on mobile devices, the shortener will fight spam, enable better site security and have its own analytics system. What's this mean for marketers? Analytics are important to advertisers, which means it's a pretty safe bet that t.co will bring Twitter one step closer to the wide spread launch of it's "Promoted Tweets" platform, so stay tuned!
