Seems Like Only Yesterday.
While the ice hockey games and curling events of the 2010 Winter Olympics captivated us, one Oneupwebber was compelled to take a look back, way back, to 1980. Her blog chronicles the "miraculous" events that unfolded at the base of the Adirondacks in the Tijuana Jail (lucky for her, it wasn't a real jail). Check it out.

Foursquare for Adults

Has It Really Been that Long?

10 years ago JT was still singing his heart away with ‘N Sync, Y2K mania had come and gone, Bush defeated Gore and Mel Gibson showed us What Women Want. And that very same year, our fearless leader, Lisa Wehr, moved from Alaska to Traverse City with a hair-brained idea to setup an online marketing company. We've come a long way since then. And while we couldn't convince Lisa to give us a picture of her early 2000's haircut, we did put together this timeline that lays out all the important happenings at Oneupweb over the years. Check it out, and if you're feeling inspired, contact us today to see what we can do for you.

Do Users Care About Real-Time Results?

Search Gone Wild!A few months ago Google started serving up real-time results. These are live updates from people on popular sites like Twitter and FriendFeed, as well as headlines from articles and blog posts. These updates are given in real-time, so when someone conducts a search they will receive the updates on that topic that were published just seconds before. But is anyone paying attention to them? And are people actually clicking on them? That's exactly what we set to find out in our new eye tracking study, Search Gone Wild: An Eye Tracking Study on Google's Real-Time Results. Onlee Bowden: "In Your Own Words"—More Real, Less Polished.

We sat down and spoke with Onlee Bowden, Founder of "In Your Own Words" public speaking instruction, about some marketing initiatives she's launched within the past year, successes she's experienced and ways she's growing her business in 2010.

A Oneupweb client since 2009, Onlee has been transforming fear-riddled clientele into confident, accomplished speakers for more than 20 years. How does she achieve such an undertaking? She draws on her life experiences, which include a mixture of training in academics and martial arts, as well as ideas and theories acquired from her many journeys and experiences. She believes that the strongest public speaking skills spawn from a blend of life experiences, feelings and memories. And having had the entire Oneupweb staff undergo Onlee's training, we can safely vouch for her. She's magical—no really! But her magic doesn't stop here.

When it comes to marketing "In Your Own Words" public speaking instruction, Onlee's got more than one trick up her sleeve. From relationship building, to word of mouth marketing to social media marketing, one thing's for certain. Onlee is one savvy marketer.

"It's a fact. People fear public speaking more than they fear death," Onlee divulges. "It's a very touchy subject and that makes marketing my business somewhat tricky. But I take a more real, less polished approach to public speaking. I urge people to draw on their talents and bring their personality onstage with them—it's a different strategy and it works."

But tricky nor touchy isn't stopping Onlee from making a splash. She's established a strong, consistent reputation—and she uses it to her advantage. Relationship building and word of mouth marketing are her biggest marketing strategies, but it doesn't stop here. The tight knit relationships she continues to nurture with her clientele have paid off. Not only has she developed a huge local following, but some national as well. One of her biggest advocates is National Geographic journalist, Tom Clines, who even published an article raving about Onlee after traveling to Traverse City and completing her "In Your Own Words" public speaking course. Now that's a big deal!

But where's the web fit into all of this? With the help of Oneupweb, Onlee has a brand new website and is successfully lassoing the power of social media. In an effort to reflect Onlee's sassy, fun loving personality, Oneupweb also filmed a video of her which is featured on her homepage as well as on YouTube and Facebook. The video serves as a means for prospective clients to gain a deeper sense of Onlee's style, personality and approach to public speaking training.

"Social media is just like word of mouth marketing," explains Onlee. "It's simply a way to be in touch with people. Oneupweb convinced me I wouldn't regret taking this step, and I certainly don't."

We don't blame her. The custom video work on the site's homepage and on YouTube has garnered more than 150 views in the first month it launched and continues to gain interest.

All in all, the message is clear. When it comes to tackling public speaking fears and building public speaking skills, there's no better instructor than Onlee Bowden. She's real. And everyone (no exceptions) can benefit from the knowledge and skills that her "In Your Own Words" public speaking instruction has to offer.

Onlee—Thanks for taking the time to speak with us about your marketing challenges, feats and goals. It's been a pleasure!

Listen to LisaHot Off the Desk of Lisa Wehr.

CEO, Lisa WehrI've been having a lot of conversations lately with current and prospective clients who are looking to turn traffic on their website into cold, hard cash. While strong SEO and paid search campaigns (mixed in with a bit of social media, online banner ads and digital pr) are bringing in qualified leads, that does not guarantee sales. So how do you bring home the bacon? They key to success should begin and end with your website.

Your website has the ability to be the engine that drives sales, conversions and loyalty to your brand. But is it performing up to par? Here are a few things to look for:

  • Design. As ridiculous as it sounds, people favor things that look nice. Is your website pleasing to the eye, while at the same time clearly communicating your brand?
  • Organization. Clear, consistent organization is critical. If a customer is confused by something on your site, no matter what it is, I can guarantee that they'll look elsewhere. Make sure the content, products and services included on your site, and they way they're organized, make sense to you and meet the needs of your target audience.
  • Interface Friendliness. This sounds super-complicated, but it's probably one of the easiest things you can fix on your site to help increase sales. Make sure your forms aren't asking for excessive, ridiculous amounts of personal information. A good rule of thumb is if you wouldn't want to fill it out on another site, don't make your customers do it on yours.
  • Privacy Policy. Simple. Do you have one? If you don't, get one. And mean it.
  • Make It Work. Does your site work on all versions of the popular web browsers—not just the version of Internet Explorer you use? In other words, did you test it in Opera, Safari and Firefox? Not everyone uses the same web browser as you, but it's important to ensure that everyone does have the same great experience with your brand.

I could go on and on, but there's one thing that I do want to point out. While I opened up with a bullet point on design, I hope from the rest of the tips you can see that when it comes to your website, pretty alone just doesn't cut it.

If you need help with your website—let me know. You can shoot me an email at info@oneupweb.com, request a proposal, give me a call at 877.568.7477 or (in true social media fashion) send me a tweet @lisawehr. I look forward to speaking with you about your website needs.
