Hot Off the Desk of Oneupweb CEO Lisa Wehr
Reputation Management: Be on the Lookout

One of the hottest things to cross my desk this week has been reputation management. Countless sad stories have appeared online and in the news about companies that didn't invest in reputation management until they recognized a problem. With the advent of social media, it is more important than ever for business-to-consumer and business-to-business companies to take an active role in monitoring their reputation online. Here are a few things to be on the lookout for:

  • Blogs. A blog is a self-published website that is usually written in a journal format. Anyone can have a blog, and unfortunately, there are few laws to protect your company from a blog writer (or reader) voicing their opinion. Blog writers can invite feedback and comments from readers. Often bloggers write good things about your company, but sometimes they may have a negative statement that can be harmful to your business. It's critical to monitor blogs and comments—both good and bad—to understand who is talking about your company, and what they have to say. And this should be done daily—at a minimum.
  • Search Results. Are you ranking in the top search engine results pages (SERPs) for your company name and branded keywords? If you're not, then who is? You need to define your company, or someone else will. And you may not like their definition. Don't forget that you can also use search results to prepare an online response for common criticisms.
  • Social Networking Groups. What do you know about the different social media and consumer review sites, chat rooms and directories? It's important to get a handle on what's out there, what's being said and where potentially damaging material could appear. It's also good to know where positive things are being said. This will help you identify the right social networks for effective social
    media marketing.

Oneupweb has written an entire white paper dedicated to crisis management. I highly recommend marketing and public relations professionals, no matter the industry or company size, download
and read this.

The pillars of public relations remain the same—it's still about being “honest, thorough and first”—but now it's also about knowing how and where to monitor sentiments about your business.

As an internationally recognized thought leader in integrated online marketing, Oneupweb authors and maintains an extensive library of original white papers, articles and research.
