Oneupweb : 2010 Communitas Award

We just announced that Oneupweb has been awarded a 2010 Communitas Award. And among all the awards we’ve won over the years, I have to say that this is my favorite—simply because of the principle behind it. Companies who are chosen to be honored with this award are said to exhibit the spirit of communitas, a Latin word that means people coming together for the good of a community. Oneupweb was honored for our One for the Road: Operation Michigan tour.

This tour was a lot of work! We were literally sitting around one day, talking about the terrible Michigan economy and wondering what we could do to help other businesses continue to stay in the state. That’s when our CEO, Lisa Wehr, got her crazy idea. Basically, seven of us would pack into her 1970’s motorhome and drive around the state, offering our consulting services for free to any Michigan business that met us along the way. Simply because it was what we could do to help.

That idea became a reality and one trip that I will never forget. And all of that work? It was worth it to see business owners and professionals who participated leave with a strategic plan, and more importantly, a little more hope. Of course, we had a little fun along the way (in true Oneupweb style).

But it wasn’t about Oneupweb. It was about one Michigan business reaching out to help others. It was about coming together for the good of the community. It was about “communitas”.
