Monday Marketing Minute: Understanding GDPR

Posted on in Video

Every Monday, marketing experts from Oneupweb take a minute to talk about industry tips and tricks, new and noteworthy trends, and more.

This week, we sit down with Ashley Mugnolo and Freddy Hunt to discuss how U.S. companies are affected by the European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) policy that went into effect May 25.

Ashley: Hi, welcome to the Monday Marketing Minute, I’m Ashley Mugnolo.

Freddy: And I’m Freddy Hunt, and today we’re going to be talking about GDPR.

A: GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation.

F: That’s right, and the reason why so many marketers are talking about it, is because Google sent out an alert regarding data retention settings.

A: So first off, our recommendation is to update your Google Analytics settings to reflect your internal data policy. If your company dumps personal data after 12 months, make sure that Google Analytics reflects that.

F: That’s right, and the default setting is 26 months. That doesn’t mean you’re going to lose all of your data after that timeframe. Most marketers report on aggregate data, and aggregate data is going to be unaffected.

A: Very good point. So if your company doesn’t have a data retention policy, now is a great time to start thinking about that.

F: The new policy kicked off on May 25th, so if you operate in the EU or you collect data from people in the EU, you should probably have a policy and adhere to it.

A: So make sure you check out our blog for some more information and some resources to help you establish a data policy.

F: And that’s our marketing minute, tune in next week.
