Common Video Marketing Terms:

A/B Testing: comparing two versions of a video to see which performs better

Analytics: data and insights about video performance

Call to Action (CTA): a prompt at the end of a video that encourages viewers to take a desired action, such as subscribing to a channel or visiting a website

Closed Captioning: text version of dialogue and sound effects that appears on screen, typically used for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing

Conversion Rate: the number of viewers who take a desired action after watching a video, such as subscribing to a channel or clicking on a link

Cropping: trimming unwanted edges off of a video frame

Deinterlacing: converting video from an interlaced to a progressive scan format

Digital Rights Management (DRM): security measure to protect digital video content from unauthorized copying or distribution

Encoding: process of converting video into a digital format that can be played on a computer or mobile device

Frame Rate: number of frames or individual video images displayed per second

Interlacing: scan format for video where even and odd lines are displayed in alternate order

Motion Graphics: video graphics that are created to look like they’re in motion, often used for intros, transitions, and lower thirds

Progressive Scan: video scan format where all lines are displayed in sequential order

Quality of Service (QoS): measures video streaming quality, including factors like video resolution and buffering

Render: process of creating the final video file from all the individual video assets

Resolution: video quality, typically measured in pixels

Video Codec: computer software used to encode or decode digital video files

Watermark: semi-transparent logo or image overlaid on a video that’s usually placed in the corner

Photography Glossary Terms Relevant to Video:

Aperture: opening in a camera lens that regulates the amount of light that enters

Aspect Ratio: ratio of width to height of a video frame or image

Depth of Field: distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image

Exposure: amount of light that reaches a film or digital sensor, determined by factors like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO

Focal Length: distance from the camera lens to the image plane, usually expressed in millimeters

ISO: measure of a film or digital sensor’s sensitivity to light

Shutter Speed: amount of time that a camera’s shutter is open to expose light onto the film or digital sensor
