Every Monday marketing experts from Oneupweb take a minute to talk about industry tips & tricks, new and noteworthy trends, and more. This week we sat down with SEO experts Gillian Cobb and Freddy Hunt to discuss why and how you should be submitting your XML sitemaps to Google and Bing.
Gillian: Welcome to the Monday Marketing Minute. I’m Gillian Cobb.
Freddy: And I’m Freddy Hunt, and today we’re going to be talking about why and how to submit your XML sitemap to Google and Bing.
G: Let’s talk about the why first. By submitting your sitemap to search engines like Google, you’re not only making sure that they’re indexing the most recent version of the site, but you’re opening up an entirely new way to receive data. You’ll be able to see if your site has any errors in the indexing process, which can make a huge difference in keeping your site optimized.
F: Yes, and now how to submit your sitemap. Your website has an XML sitemap even if you don’t know it. Go to <YourDomain>.com/siteamp.xml. Now, copy this URL.
G: Next log in to Google Search Console and find Sitemaps under the crawl menu.
F: Click “Add/Test sitemap” and paste the URL right there and click “Go”.
G: Done! Bing Webmaster Tools has the same process.
F: Yup, though most websites use a plug-in that automatically updates their sitemap as new pages are added to their website.
G: But you can also submit pages individually via Search Console.
F: And if you want to take a shortcut, you can just Google submit a page and submit the URL right there in search.
F: And that’s your Marketing Minute.
G: See ya next week!
