Jonelle

I started my career as a computer programmer in 2000 and have been working in the web and marketing agency world since 2007.

Over the years, I’ve contributed to projects of all sizes for local, national, and international clients, gaining experience across a variety of industries. My work has evolved from backend development with a hint of full stack responsibilities into leading the Oneupweb development team.

I enjoy improving efficiencies, streamlining processes, and conducting code reviews to ensure high-quality outcomes. Planning web projects from start to finish and staying hands-on in development are aspects of my work I find particularly rewarding. Balancing leadership with technical expertise allows me to guide my team while actively contributing to the success of our projects. My focus is always on delivering effective solutions, fostering collaboration, and helping both clients and colleagues achieve their goals.

What’s your average day like at Oneupweb?

With a coffee in hand and one of my dogs keeping me company, I start each day in my remote office by catching up on what the team worked on the day before. I dive into code reviews, ready approved updates to go live, and make sure everything heading out the door meets our quality standards and best practices. From there, I hunt down blockers, sort priorities, and help clear the path so the team can keep moving.

Once things are rolling, I jump into my own development work, building, refining, and improving websites. A big part of my day is answering questions, troubleshooting problems, and jumping in wherever someone needs a hand. There’s a lot of context switching, problem-solving, and keyboard time, but that’s part of the fun.

By the end of the day, I’ve balanced leading the team with getting my hands dirty in the code, making sure both our projects and our people are in a great place.

What is your best trait, and how do you use it to help your colleagues and clients?

I’m often told that I’m calm and collected, which really helps when we’re tackling the daily challenges of web development. Staying level-headed allows me to think clearly, break down problems, and guide my colleagues and our clients toward the best possible solutions.

What do you like most about Oneupweb?

I love that Oneupweb allows me to work fully remotely. The distance doesn’t stop the energy or the problem-solving within the company; it just makes those virtual high-fives even more satisfying.

What do you do when you’re not at work?

When I’m not at work, I moonlight as one of the family’s unofficial Uber drivers, driving our kids from rink to rink for hockey. In our rare downtime, I love building projects, art, exploring the outdoors, and making all sorts of memories with my family.

What are life’s simple pleasures?

It’s simple, life in itself.

Describe yourself in three words?

Dedicated, hardworking, and compassionate.

One of Google’s long-standing recommendations to marketers has been to create helpful, reliable, people-first content. The search giant has repeatedly advised brands to focus on crafting substantial pages that serve a human user first instead of search engines. With the rise of artificial intelligence, marketers who previously lived and breathed these instructions are now passing...
