Kate Mettetal, SEO and Content Marketing Specialist

Kate Mettetal

After graduating with a B.S. in Multimedia Journalism from Emerson College, I started my career reporting on global public affairs for NPR and The Boston Globe. Deadlines were tight, and my bond with the newsroom’s coffee machine was tighter. These days, I’ve traded breaking news for breaking down search algorithms as an SEO and Content Marketing Specialist at Oneupweb. Along the way, I earned a Professional Certificate in Digital Marketing from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, which taught me that even data can tell an impactful story. When I’m not wrangling high-intent keywords or brainstorming blog post topics, you can find me cooking a meal in my well-loved kitchen, marveling at the beauty of Michigan’s Northwoods, illustrating in Procreate, or cracking the daily Wordle (hint: always start with “ocean” to narrow down your vowels).

What’s your average day like at Oneupweb?

Working at Oneupweb makes it easy to romanticize my everyday existence. Why? Because mundanity feels like a distant concept in the ever-changing landscape of digital marketing. Every day is fresh, dynamic, and filled with growth potential. One day, I’m developing a complex automated workflow, and the next I’m meeting with clients to mull over new SEO content strategies. Some days I’m a writer, some days I’m an editor, some days I’m a project manager, some days I’m a researcher, and every day I’m thrilled to be a member of the OUW team.

What is your best trait, and how do you use it to help your colleagues and clients?

I’m an incredibly hyper-vigilant and deep thinker, meaning that nuance and I are best friends. I’m comfortable dealing with high-dimensional, multifaceted problems without requiring a “simple answer,” always approach situations with an open mind, and can easily anticipate the needs of my colleagues, clients, and loved ones.

What do you like most about Oneupweb?

My colleagues. ❤️ As the saying goes, it’s not where you work but who you work with that makes a job worth going to every day. Do I fundamentally love my job for the balance it strikes between artistry and analytics? Absolutely! But it’s even better when I’m surrounded by brilliant, hardworking individuals who fill my day with endless knowledge and laughter.

What do you do when you’re not at work?

Admittedly, I’m one of those people who never really stops moving. To limit my screentime and disavow my generation’s affinity for “bed rotting,” I like to keep busy and fill my weekends with activities that feel intentional, satisfying, and low-stakes. When I’m not working, you can find me over a simmering pot on the stove, cleaning and organizing my home, getting my steps in, listening to a long-forgotten album, crafting, perusing through dollar bins at my local record store, or curling up to watch a movie with my boyfriend (my residential film connoisseur).

What are life’s simple pleasures?

Walking barefoot on freshly-cut grass, the feeling of taking your first sip of tea on a cold day, the smell of newspaper and morning coffee, lingering hugs, wheezing laughter, dancing like nobody’s watching, anything analog, watching treetops dance in a summer breeze, sun-soaked picnics, handwritten letters, symbiosis in action, memorable conversations with complete strangers

One of Google’s long-standing recommendations to marketers has been to create helpful, reliable, people-first content. The search giant has repeatedly advised brands to focus on crafting substantial pages that serve a human user first instead of search engines. With the rise of artificial intelligence, marketers who previously lived and breathed these instructions are now passing...
